Maison Margiela’s Tabis are well regarded among the contemporary fashion set, but did you know that the iconic style has a long history behind it? First launched for the House’s debut collection in 1989, the style’s split toe – thought to promote balance – is inspired by the traditional 15th-century Japanese sock of the same name. These new ballerinas are crafted from soft nappa leather with a handcrafted used treatment applied at the folds, base and seams, manually worked to create an artisanal vintage effect.
