The Most Boring MET GALA in History? The most ‘Relevant’ and ‘Irrelevant’ Dressed at the Met Gala 2022

No doubt, the Met Gala is a global spectacle, with the biggest stars gathering for what has been dubbed “Oscar of Fashion” since 1948. As fashion’s biggest night out, the fundraising gala is held annually on the first Monday of May for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City.

Every year, the event organizer sets a dress code for attendees. From popular actors and actresses to musicians, models and artists, they all collaborate with designers and stylists to become the talk of the town, or even make history. Rihanna’s imperial yellow, fur-trimmed cape which quickly turned into viral memes, Katy Perry’s Maschino burger get-up, or Zendaya’s magical Cinderella gown that glowed on the red carpet — all classics they are.

Met Gala 2022: In America: An Anthology of Fashion

The theme of this year's Met Gala, "In America: An Anthology of Fashion'' is a sequel of the 2021 collection, which explores the history of American fashion, centering around the theme “Gilded Glamor”, paying homage to the period of prosperity, industrialization and rapid growth in the US from the 1870s to 1900s. As an era of much experience the cultural influence of the Victorian period in England, lace, silk, ruffles, corsets and other elements of courtly aristocracy, and of course, gold are accessorised in costume design.

The "Most Relevant" Star Look

In recent years, the red carpet at the Met Gala has evolved into a "costume transformation" show. The co-chair, Blake Lively, was inspired by the oxidation of the Statue of Liberty in New York, and wore a shimmering rhinestone Aterlier Versace gown with a copper bow at the hip that revealed a turquoise skirt train. The look is paired with a Lorraine Schwartz crown ode to the Statue of Liberty, a perfect tribute to American history!

The other star who stays true to the gilded glam theme is Billie Eilish. Wearing a custom Gucci silk corseted gown with a padded bustle, she looked like an aristocrat from the Gilded Age. Putting her own spin on the gilded glamour dress code, the singer also wore a stack of necklaces and jewelled chokers. Inspired by the fashion of the 1890s where women were obsessed with ideal body proportions, from makeup to clothing, Billie Eilish became an ancient goddess, revealing the nobility of high fashion.

The "Most Irrelevant" Star Look

This year's negative comments can be said to focus on Kylie Jenner. The Off-White pristine bridal ensemble included a tulled ruffled skirt, a mesh T-shirt atop and a baseball cap worn backwards, showing a sense of street style slant and glamour. Unfortunately, the dress x baseball cap outfit was a swing and miss. Not only did it look very messy, but also deviated from the "Gilded Glamour" theme of the event.

Camila Cabello hit the Met Gala red carpet in a custom Prabal Gurung gown. The narrow sleeveless strappy crop top was imperfectly designed to accentuate her chubby arms, while the long skirt bursting with tufts of edgy flowers and pleated cutouts underneath made her even unevenly proportioned, which is no wonder why she was called a "red carpet disaster".
