Set in the Cold War era of the 1950s and 60s, the mini-series, which was adapted from a novel of the same name by Walter Tevis, follows the story of Beth Harmon, an orphan who also happens to be a chess prodigy. The series has been met with huge acclaim, especially for the leading actress Anya Taylor-Joy who plays Harmon. If you think Anya Taylor-Joy looks familiar it’s because you might have already seen her in the successful adoption of Emma, The New Mutants or The Witch. In The Queen’s Gambit, however, which is being described as her breakout role, all the attention is on her character Beth, whose incredible chess skills lead her to compete in the male-dominated chess scene.
