Eyeliners are one of the most important inventions for women. Without the need to perform surgery, your eyes can become just as big and beautiful with makeup. However, eye makeup could be a bit daunting for beginners, especially when trying to achieve symmetry and master thick and thin lines, and sometimes they fall into an endless loop of “draw, erase, redraw”. Applying eyeliner is actually not as hard as it seems, you just have to pick the right products, learn the correct techniques, and gradually perfect through practice!

TYPES OF EYELINERS

There are various types of eyeliners, but the main ones are hard and soft eyeliner pencils, liquid eyeliners and gel eyeliners. Each type of eyeliner has its own pros and cons. Hard eyeliner pencils can draw precise lines, but may pull or tug the skin accidentally, making the lines appear bumpy and uneven. With soft eyeliner pencils you can easily draw soft lines but they can also easily smudge the eyelid. Liquid eyeliners can draw sharp and smooth lines, but they are relatively more difficult to master and are thus not suitable for beginners. Gel eyeliners can draw fine, smooth lines but the color wears off easily. You can choose the most suitable products according to your personal needs, makeup preferences and weather conditions.

TECHNIQUE #1 – ELONGATING YOUR EYES

Eyeliner pencils are great for beginners to start practicing drawing lines, for they help you master the drawing techniques while not being as difficult to handle as liquid or gel eyeliners. You can start by using eyeliner pencils to fill in the gaps and sparse areas in the lash line, then gently pull your eyelid slightly upward using a finger and draw a thicker lash line. Extend the liner beyond the tail of the lash line and make a wing, and fill in the triangle created. If you want to make your eyes more prominent, apply a few dabs of eyeliner to the outer third of your lower lash line and blend it out well with your fingers, creating a natural shadow effect.

TECHNIQUE #2 – MAKING YOUR EYES LOOK BIGGER

First, fill in the sparse areas in the lash line with a brownish-color soft eyeliner pencil, so that it won’t have the sharp effect as produced by a black eyeliner pencil, but creating instead a soft and sweet touch and an enlarging effect. Then, extend the eyeliner beyond the corner of your eye for about 3mm, followed by using an eyeliner brush to blend it out. Finally, use a liquid eyeliner to draw a sharp, smooth wing at the outer corner of your eye to complete the gorgeous, natural big-eye look!

TECHNIQUE #3 – THE KOREAN INNOCENT LOOK

Korean girls are fond of using eyeliners to create the perfectly youthful, innocent look that is such a hot trend now. To pull off this look, first draw the inner eyeline, then slightly press back the lashes and fill in the eyeliner from the center to the tail then back again. Finally, extend the lash line just a little outward while not exceeding the length of the eyelid, which will help create a rounder eye shape.
