Come summer comes fear of not wearing enough sunscreen, getting sunburned and feeling the effects of ultraviolet light. Damage caused by ultraviolet rays like UVA to the skin actually penetrate deep into the dermis, causing the skin to lose collagen faster, resulting in age spots, fine lines, sagging, wrinkles and other ageing problems, which are difficult to reverse once they appear. Korean frozen-age actresses like Kim Tae-hee and Lee Young-ae emphasise the importance of sun protection against ageing for the youthful look they have!

1. Is the bigger the number the better for SPF and PA?

Do you know the difference between UVA and UVB in ultraviolet light? UVA penetrates very strongly and can reach the bottom layer of the skin, causing skin ageing. On the contrary, UVB has a weak penetrating ability, yet is powerful enough to cause damage to the surface of the skin, like redness and sunburn. Therefore, the SPF and PA values commonly found in sunscreen products are the sunscreen capabilities for UVB and UVA, respectively.

The SPF value of sunscreen products on the market generally range from 10 to 50. SPF15 to 30 can block about 93-97% of ultraviolet rays and UVB respectively, which is generally good enough to reduce the burden of the sun’s effect on the skin.

On the contrary, if you’re active under the strong sun for a long time such as during a physical workout, you need to use SPF50 and waterproof products, which can block about 98% of ultraviolet rays and UVB. However, use with caution as this factor usually has "more variety" of sunscreen formulations, using heavy ingredients that may interfere with normal skin secretion and respiration. In turn this can breed acne and pimples, while increasing the risk of skin allergies.

As for the "PA" value next to SPF, it refers to the ability to resist UVA. There are four levels from "+" to "++++++". The more "+", the better the effect. Among them, PA++++ can delay tanning time by more than 16 times!

2. Chemical sunscreen vs. Physical sunscreen?

Chemical sunscreen refers to the chemicals in sunscreens that absorb UV energy and convert it into heat, thereby reducing UV rays from penetrating deep into skin. The general texture is generally easy to absorb, refreshing, and suitable for oily and acne-prone skin. However, the ingredients used in different products may cause skin sensitivity, and children and pregnant women should avoid using them as much as possible.

Physical sunscreens generally use larger substances such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to form a barrier on the skin surface and reflect ultraviolet rays. The texture means the product sits on top of the skin and does not penetrate beneath. Although it is suitable for sensitive skin, the product will appear whiter, thicker, and may also clog pores.
