The interior is worked smooth so the veining shifts with the light; the exterior stays rough and matte. The contrast between the two finishes is the whole condition of the object.Raw outside, polished inside: the block keeps its quarried face on every exterior surface and gives up only the hollow to finishing. The rough faces hide marks the polished interior would show.
